Alopecia androgenetic is a stubborn progressive hair loss condition which is partially caused by heredity and driven by the androgen hormone dihydrotestosterone or DHT. Alopecia androgenetic can begin as early as persons teens and is easily recognizable by the pattern of balding it imparts on its usually unsuspecting victims. In this informational article titled “Important Information About Alopecia Androgenetic” we will delve further into this condition and ultimately search for answers on how those affected can slow and possibly reverse this common condition.

The story of alopecia androgenetic (male or female pattern baldness) is one that generally starts slow and roars to a conclusion that totally changes a persons appearance. The average person starts with an abundance of scalp hairs (over 100,000) which spring from a small sac just under the skin called a follicle. Each day about 100 hairs are lost with many being replaced by new growth and even when not all of the hair is replaced there is very little visual evidence to suggest that balding is taking place, simply due to the density of scalp hair. But over time the gradual erosion starts to become noticeable.

One could make a compelling argument that all male and female pattern baldness does is speed up the natural process and is generally only noticed after a few hair cycles which can span as many as twelve years. The reason for the acceleration is the androgen hormone DHT which is converted in the hair cell by one or multiple enzymes from the well known hormone testosterone.

Over time DHT accumulates in the follicle complex and alopecia androgenetic begins, ultimately rendering many follicles incapable of producing new growth while causing others to simply die.

If you have this condition you will certainly experience vary degrees of balding and/or thinning but perhaps just as obvious will be a change in hair texture. The hair shaft will become thinner and less robust particular on top. It will be obvious to you simply by running your fingers through your hair. You will notice feeling more scalp than normal especially on the crown due to lack of hair coverage.

Alopecia androgenetic looks quite different in men and women. In men balding begins at the forehead or on the top of the head toward the back. For the lucky ones their hair loss involves only a receding hair line with some thinning and a small bald spot on the crown. For others, especially those whose alopecia androgenetic began in their teens they will lose all of the hair on top.

For women, while the news is not good it certainly isn’t as bad. Women normally experience more of an overall thinning with the all important hair line often staying intact. They will notice a change in hair texture and overall hair health. For those who part their hair on the top the part may widen, leading more scalp to be exposed than they are generally accustomed to.

What Next? Alopecia androgenetic is a progressive condition that will not reverse itself without some form of treatment. Currently there are a handful of hair regrowth products specifically designed to address DHT and hair loss. Not only do they contain FDA approved ingredients which have been shown to block dihydrotestosterone (DHT) but also work to stimulate the scalp and bring dead follicles back to life. These hair regrowth products can be used as a preventative tool, starting the program before alopecia androgenetic becomes severe, or you can use them after DHT has already begun to take hold of your hair and scalp. The important thing is to take action because it is much more difficult to regrow lost hair than it is to retain your remaining hair.
